Welcome to Rooland

With great knowledge comes great responsibility

Hello, I'm Evaristo Ramos, Jr., a multi-disciplinary creator and compulsive learner based in Guelph, Ontario. I thrive on staying up to date with a diverse array of technologies, earning me the moniker of the "toymaker" in certain circles—akin to Q in the Bond movies or Lucius Fox in Batman. My journey in the tech realm has been varied and dynamic. My goal is to share my knowledge and skills in ways where it is able to create the greatest positive change for individuals, organizations, and or communities.

Interests

As a curious individual and compulsive continuous learner I have wide range of interests which include:

  • Robotics - for me its the challenge of making the kits and then seeing how I can modify them or use parts for other projects
  • Item creation - making items usually as gifts for others using my machines
  • Crafts - Much to the detriment of my wife I have a whole host of crafts I am learning:
    • Sewing
    • Beading
    • Drawing & coloring
    • wanting to learn how to knit and crochet (of which I need to start)

Projects

Fullstack

I am currently in phase 2 of research for an MMIP (Missing Murdered Indigenous Peoples) case mapping and database project I began during my time at Mohawk College. There as part my studies in the Indigenous classes taught by Rick McLean I began to research my ancestry and learned that I am Lipan Apache paternally and I am still researching my maternal lineage. This is important to me as I identify as an Indigenous person and I feel this is a cause where I can use all of my technical skills to give back to many communities.

Web Development

If These Lands Could Talk one page and multi-page website which was done as part of the IFA (Indigenous Friends Association) Web Development Internship. Here I assisted with code review, collaborative coding and feature enhancement via group work and GIT/GITHub for management. In phase one of the IFA program, HTML/CSS/Javascript (taught by IFA), UX Research and Design Foundations (taught by Jumping Elephant), and Digital Skills for Entrepreneurship (taught by Canada Learning Code).

Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus recording prototype

I also enjoy making prototypes, one prototype I made was a device to record the eye movements of individuals suspected of DUI, this device allows the recording and in future iterations the processing of the recorded data via established standards to provide evidence of the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test that is often administered by the police.

The video is an example of recording the device create, place close attention the pupil, in our test subjects here they had drank 3 glasses of wine, the pupil dialation and shaky eye movement at the ends of axis movements are what help verification that a person is potentially under the influence.

AR Sandbox

One my most favorite builds I did when I owned a makerspace was an AR (Artificial Reality) sandbox to demonstrate fluid dynamics. It was well enjoyed everywhere we had a chance to demonstrate the technologies from ComicPalooza to schools
